Investigation - Exploring Tintern!

So far we have had a thinking skills day and Mr Rugg explianed to the whole of our year group why electricity, machinery, cars and heating is so bad for the environment and is effecting the habitat of polar bears and other animals in cold places.  A few months later the BBC visited ou school as they were interested in Mr Rugg's Polar Bear Song and upcoming expedition to Canada, Hudson Bay in November 2009.  This inspired us to produce our own class website about climate change, compost and worms, transition Chepstow and share current projects and plans.  The whole of the year group ventured into Tintern to explore local history and heritage.  Here are some photos of the day.

Exploring the Old Tintern Ironworks:

It is believed that the birth place of the industrial Revolution was at this very Ironworks.

Exploring Tintern Abbey:

Year 7’s went on a school trip to Tintern. We explored the surroundings and answered questions based on what we could see and retrieve about Tintern Abbey and it’s features. We had to go on a little hunt to find answers to some of the questions and discover How the monks lived sustainably. We learned that Monks built Tintern Abbey in 1131 AD during the reign of Henry I.  Between 1270 and 1301 the Abbey was rebuilt after which four hundred Monks lived there.  During the reign of Henry VIII the lead was stripped from the roof and the building was burned and left to decay. It was around 1760 the sight was cleaned up and visitors began to enjoy the beauty of the sight and its surroundings. We discovered all sorts of things. We looked at all of the different artefacts and features of Tintern Abbey.

Hydro Power: Tintern - Angiddy Project:

Visiting location of planned Hydro Power site.
Hydro Power is elecricty that is generated by water.  A dam is made to trap water, it is usually placed in the Angiddy valley where there is a existing body of water. It works by moving the water through the turbines. It will be situated near or in moving water as the water is used to move the turbines to gererate the electricty. There are many benefits of hydro power these include being extremely enviromentally friendly as there are no emissions or wasted products and it is a renewable source. There are currently plans in motion for the construction of a Hydro-powered turbine in Tintern!

What is Transition Chepstow?

Transition Chepstow is a group of people (villagers/council) who get together to share ideas on how to make Chepstow a more sustainable place.  They help fight climate change and find ways to help Chepstow use less energy so it will make Chepstow a better, more sustainable place to live.  At the moment, 'Transition Chepstow' has a plan and it will help us save '30 TONNES' of Co2 emissions from just the leisure centre alone!!
